Caught in Fall Time

Summer Time Here

Looks like he caught this small halibut from our stream but it came from my son Roberts boat out in the bay.  They are best eating fish when about this size; however they get up to 375lbs.  Halibuts when large have to be shot in the water before pulling them aboard as they have been known to flop on the deck so hard that they break it.  That is where the saying "Just for the haell  i  bit " came from.  Lots of salmon ( King, Chum, Dog, Silver & Sockeye) all make their way to our coves.  We also have Dolly Varden which is between the salmon and the trout.  And of course, lots of Halibut and King Crab are in our waters.

Underside of the Halibut.  The eyes are usually seen on the other side.  This one floated over.

This side of the fish has no eye and is always snow white.   It looks like the way he is holding it that the eye from the other side snuck around a bit.

This is the side you will see the artists do their scrimshaw, ivory carvings and other art work of.  The halibut is filleted to make wonderful white steaks.
